Luke Roberts
The best team pursuit rider, ever? With national, world junior, Commonwealth, world senior and Olympic titles to his name, Aussie, Luke Roberts can't be far away. We spoke to the man from Adelaide during the six days of Grenoble, which he went on to win, with partner, Franco Marvulli.
PEZ: You were three times junior world champion, Luke.
Luke: In '94 I won individual bronze and team pursuit gold; but in '95 I got both golds. There was a lot of pressure, we were only 17 or 18 and on the same training programme as the elites - guys like Stuey O'Grady, Brad McGee and Dean Woods.PEZ:Luke,你曾经拿过3次青少年世界冠军。
PEZ: But it took you a few years to find your feet at senior level.
Luke: Leading up to Sydney 2000 there was a lot of pressure. Those were the years when the amateur/pro distinction was done away with and '97 up to 2000 was a struggle. There were riders on the programme like Mick Rogers and Baden Cooke - we were all 'good' but not at the top.
The national programme changed too and I think it was only when we went to Europe and raced there as professionals that we moved up. That led to me being part of the Aussie team that won three Worlds (02, 03 and 04) and the Olympics (04); I was part of that and all the records we set.PEZ:但这你也是仅仅花了几年的时间,就在顶级水平的比赛中站稳了脚跟。
PEZ: Two individual Worlds silvers, too.
Luke: Yeah, I was unlucky to come across the "Two Brads" - McGee and Wiggins. My focus from 2002 to 2004 was the team pursuit. We had an incredible group of seven or eight guys and there was a lot of pressure, but I guess I was the backbone of the team. The fitness I had from that training gave me the speed for the individual pursuitPEZ:还有两枚个人的第二名呢?
PEZ: After silver to McGee in '02 you must have thought you could win in '03?
Luke: For sure, my second to McGee at Copenhagen was a bit of a surprise; I'd ridden 4-19 at the Commonwealth Games and ended up fourth, I wasn't sure how I'd do at the Worlds. But I qualified second fastest and ended up silver medallist to McGee.
The next year, the Worlds were in Cologne and with living in Germany, I had a lot of friends and family there - and McGee wasn't riding. But that was the year when Wiggins stepped up to a different level - I thought I had it won, but he put in a 1:2, or maybe even a 1:1 last kilometre and that was that!PEZ:在经历02年McGee比赛的银牌后,你告诉自己03年一定要赢吗?
PEZ: You were absent from team pursuiting from 04 until '08.
Luke: I signed with CSC and rode for them for three seasons; that was an awesome experience but team pursuiting wasn't the priority - the Tour was. At the end of 2007, my contract wasn't renewed and I decided to go back to my original team - Senges - the one I was with leading up to Athens and that allowed me to concentrate on the team pursuit, again.PEZ:从04年直到08年,你都缺席了车队的团体追逐赛。
PEZ: What's 'Senges?'
Luke: They no longer sponsor the team - they were an industrial cleaning firm - it's Kuota (bikes and frames)/Indeland, this year. But the team has had a pro licence since 2001 and were developing a good structure, when I joined in 2002. I spent a lot of time racing and training in Germany and made a lot of friends there, so it was a good fit for me to join a German team. There's a lot of crits and track racing which suit me better than racing in Italy or Spain, say.PEZ:什么是“Senges”?

PEZ: How many sixes did you ride last season?
Luke: I did six, all with different partners, it would be good to get a regular Aussie partner because a lot of the organisers want 'national' teams. With me signing for Milram, I have to fit my sixes in around training camps - but the team is happy for me to ride them. They think it's a good way of keeping in shape over the winter. My last six before this was Copenhagen, with Jakob Moe, back in February.
PEZ: But back to Pro Tour for 2010.
Luke: Yeah, it's awesome to be moving form Division Three back to Pro Tour. They want me for my experience, to do a job for Gerard Ciolek, organising his lead out. At CSC we weren't structured for a sprint train, but my background in team pursuiting ideally suits me to the role.PEZ:但2010又回到职业队伍去了。
PEZ: How did you get the ride at Milram?
Luke: Through contacts in Germany; they looked at what I had to offer and thought my experience and fresh motivation would be good for the team. They're not so happy with how 2009 went and want a better year, next year.PEZ:你是怎么去到Milram骑行的呢?
PEZ: Which road result has given you most satisfaction?
Luke: I was in the CSC team time trial squad when David Zabriskie crashed whilst in the yellow jersey - I was on his wheel. It would have been awesome to win a Tour de France stage; but we were beaten by one second. At 30 kilometres that day, our average speed was 60 kph!
PEZ: What would make 2010 a success for Luke Roberts?
Luke: Leading out Gerard Ciolek to a Tour de France stage win would make it a perfect year!
***
With thanks to Luke for his time and congratulations on his first six day win.

PEZ Talk: UK's Newest ProTour Rider, Tom Faiers
Here at Pez we pride ourselves on being on the case of who's up and coming - but sometimes even Pez misses the boat. The first we heard of Tom Faiers was when he signed recently for Pro Tour team Footon-Servetto; but a quick call to the team's main man - ex-pro Mauro Gianetti, soon had us in communication with the 22 year-old Englishman from Cheltenham, who has the likes of Luis Leon Sanchez and Alejandro Valverde singing his praises.
PEZ: Congratulations on the contract and thank you for taking the time to speak to Pez - how come we've not heard of you, Tom?
Tom: I'm new to it all, I've never raced in the UK; I came into cycling late, at 18 after a year in triathlon.PEZ:恭喜你获得这个这份合同,同时感谢你抽时间来上来PEZ交流。
PEZ: Why Spain?
Tom: I went on a Graham Baxter training camp to Murcia when I was 18. When I was out there, we ran into Spanish amateurs and pros; one day we met Valverde and Sanchez, I stayed with them in the hills - everyone else was dropped - and they encouraged me to race over there. It was really hard to start with, I didn't speak any Spanish and I drove to races on my own, in my car, which I'd brought over from England. I stayed in Graham Baxter's house in Murcia for a while, then I rented an apartment, there.PEZ:为什么会在西班牙开始?
PEZ: You rode for the Camargo team, this year?
Tom: I rode for Fuenlabrada in 2008 and went to Camargo for 2009. It's a good set up, ranked fifth in Spain, the manager is very knowledgeable and there's a family, friendly feel to it.PEZ:你这一年都为Camagro车队效力吗?
PEZ: Palmares?
Tom: In the first two years, I didn't ride a lot of races, it was hard to enter races and get to them. But in '08 I started to find my legs and had around 70 race days - including 10 Tours. This year was my breakthrough, I was 8th in the Vuelta Madrid, which is one of the biggest under 23 races in Spain. I had a lot top six places and three wins - the U23 Championship of Asturias, the Elite U23 GP Orgario and an elite U23 in Cantabria.PEZ:把握住机会了么?
PEZ: Did you ever consider the GB "performance plan" as an option?
Tom: I didn't bother to start with because I didn't have results but in April or May, I rang Rod Ellingworth at British Cycling. He hadn't heard of me and didn't know much about the Spanish scene - so that came to nothing.PEZ:作为选择,你没有考虑过GB的“performance计划”吗?
PEZ: Do you have an agent?
Tom: No, the contract for Footon-Servetto was set up between my Camargo team boss and Matxin the DS at Servetto. I've only spoken to Matxin a couple of times, but it was he who spotted the results I was getting. I've spoken to Mauro Gianetti, the boss, and he's been very friendly.
PEZ: Was there one ride in particular that clinched the deal?
Tom: In the Vuelta Palencia, I was second in the time trial, just 30 seconds behind the Spanish champion. It was my first time trial so I wasn't sure how I would go and I didn't give it 100%. I beat the time trial specialists in my own team by two minutes - it was that ride which Matxin really noticed. I'm a climber, really, 68 kilos, tall and thin, I don't have big muscle mass, I was surprised how I went in that time trial.
PEZ: How's the Spanish; do you have the swear words?
Tom: I'm pretty much fluent now, the first two years were very hard, I couldn't even ring up my team manager to talk to him about where we were racing. And yes, I have all the swear words!
PEZ: Are you nervous about the jump to Pro Tour?
Tom: Yes, but looking forward to it too, I have a team mate with me, so that will make things a bit easier, but I really want to learn what it's all about.
PEZ: Do you have your programme, yet?
Tom: We have a team meet on November 28 in Santander, we'll be getting our bikes then - I'm pretty sure it'll be Fujis - and talking about my programme. They'll decide if I'm riding San Luis in Argentina or the Tour Down Under.
他们会决定我究竟参加在Argentina的San Luis大赛还是Tour Down Under。
PEZ: Have you started training, yet?
Tom: I've had five weeks off and am just back in the gym and on the bike.
PEZ: Goals for 2010?
Tom: I'm not targeting any specific race, or anything like that, I really just want to learn a lot and adapt. I want to stay with the pace, not be in the gruppetto.***
There you have it, like Jimmy Cliff says; "you can get it if you really want!"
